Legendary pianist Alfred Brendel has died at the age of 94, according to France Musique. A towering figure of 20th- and 21st-century piano music, Brendel was celebrated for his interpretations of Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, and Liszt, and was one of the first to record complete cycles of their piano works, which have served — and will continue to serve — as a reference for generations of pianists.
Born in 1931, Brendel combined intellectual rigor with poetic insight, earning international acclaim over a career spanning more than six decades. He retired from public performance in 2008, devoting his final years to writing and lecturing.
