When I think about love songs, I think of the music of Michel Legrand—a composer whose work is so enchanting that every note feels like a declaration of love. A master of cinematic music, Legrand has captured my heart with so many of his scores and soundtracks, and I was overjoyed to discover him in concert on medici.tv. This particular one in Brussels features music from the iconic film The Umbrellas of Cherbourg as well as the lovely “Valse des Lilas,” one of his earliest compositions.

You’ll also hear some of his collaborations with lyricist Jean Dréjac, a partnership to rival the output of Chopin and Liszt for pure romanticism. In the work of Michel Legrand, every chord is a musical embrace that awakens our senses and nourishes our heart.
