Some may say that film music isn’t “great” music or “proper classical music.” But, isn’t the opening music to Gone with the Wind just as grand as Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, only written at a different time? In fact, there are many beloved pieces lauded by classical music fans that were originally written to accompany plays, and I’m sure that in 100 years, many of today’s movie soundtracks will be considered among the greatest classical works of the 21st century.
This isn’t the first time I’ve written a staff pick on film music, and for good reason! I love that musicians always seem to have a great time performing soundtracks. And what a performance by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Neue Wiener Stimmen choir! Not only do they perform to the highest standard, the musicians also demonstrate a remarkable understanding of the works, even though, depending on their age, some of these films might be more sentimental for them than others.
