Some may say that film music isn’t “great” music or “proper classical music.” But, isn’t the opening music to Gone with the Wind just as grand as Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, only written at a different time? In fact, there are many beloved pieces lauded by classical music fans that were originally written to accompany plays, and I’m sure that in 100 years, many of today’s movie soundtracks will be considered among the greatest classical works of the 21st century.

This isn’t the first time I’ve written a staff pick on film music, and for good reason! I love that musicians always seem to have a great time performing soundtracks. And what a performance by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Neue Wiener Stimmen choir! Not only do they perform to the highest standard, the musicians also demonstrate a remarkable understanding of the works, even though, depending on their age, some of these films might be more sentimental for them than others.

Don’t just take my word for it — dive into some epic movie music moments from the gala, including the playful opening to The Muppets….

There’s no stopping the brass and woodwind!

…a theme from the Monsters Inc. soundtrack, complete with moments of almost Wagnerian gravitas…

In the film Monsters Inc., the military-sounding section in the second half of this clip accompanies the monsters as they prepare to scare children and capture their screams to use as energy for the city of Monstropolis!

…and the happily nostalgic “You’ve Got A Friend in Me” (Toy Story), performed by Randy Newman himself!

And these are just some of the beloved movie themes performed to perfection in this festive evening of music… What’s not to love?
